HISTORY OF THE Old mill Inn

Perched along the banks of the Mill River in Hatfield, Massachusetts, The Old Mill Inn tells a story woven through centuries of industry, ingenuity, and transformation. The cascading waterfall invites guests to relax, but the land beneath the inn holds a history that springs to life once you step through its doors.

The site’s industrial legacy stretches back to 1661, when Thomas Meekins, a prominent figure in the early settlement of the region, was granted water rights at the falls. Meekins established a grist mill here, using the rushing waters of the Mill River to power his enterprise. For more than two centuries, this site played a vital role in supporting the local community, from milling grain to driving other forms of manufacturing.

By 1870, the mill underwent a significant transformation when the current structure was built. This new grist mill quickly became a bustling hub of activity, reflecting the industrious spirit of Hatfield, a quintessential New England town known for its deep agricultural roots. Through the years, the structure adapted to meet the demands of changing times. From producing gun parts during industrial booms to serving as a newspaper print shop, the mill evolved to reflect the needs of each era. The building’s industrial chapter came to a close in the 20th century, giving way to its modern role as a sanctuary for travelers. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its rich past and historic significance, The Old Mill Inn first welcomed guests in 2006. By 2021, under new ownership, the inn underwent a thoughtful renovation to blend its storied past seamlessly with contemporary comforts, transforming it into a boutique destination unlike any other.

Today, walking through The Old Mill Inn is like stepping into a harmonious marriage of both past and present. The property’s exposed beams, original brickwork, and timeworn touches serve as a living tribute to its history, while its luxurious rooms and modern amenities cater to the most discerning guests. Whether you're looking for a peaceful retreat, a romantic escape, or a memorable venue for your next event, The Old Mill Inn promises an experience steeped in history, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Mill River. Here, history is more than just preserved; it echoes through every room, every stone, and every breathtaking view by the river. The Old Mill Inn invites you to become part of its enduring story, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
